Settlers sign community-based two-year partnership deal with Canadian Tire Smiths Falls

by Matt Mackinder

Earlier this month, the management of the Smiths Falls Settlers hockey club and Canadian Tire Smiths Falls retail operation’s ownership and management agreed to a two-year commitment.

The agreement was a much-needed show of support from a local business assisting the local youth sport’s team.

“The support from Canadian Tire comes at a much-needed period for our franchise," Settlers owner and head coach Barry DeGray said. "I cannot thank the owner and management of Canadian Tire Smiths Falls enough for this. The agreement is a great mix of elements that will help the team and, more importantly, assist highlighting the Canadian Tire brand and their charitable arm Jump Start in this local community. We intend to raise money for Jump Start with this relationship over the two years in various ways."

Lenny Rogers, general manager of Canadian Tire Smiths Falls, is excited for the deal.

"When we were approached by the Smiths Falls Settlers for corporate sponsors, we were quick to discuss the relationship with the management team as it aligns both we my vision of community partnerships, and our national Jump Start program supporting our local children 'getting in the game.' We are looking forward to seeing the successes of the Settlers and being a part of their journey. Go Settlers."

The Settlers' management hopes to build on this landmark relationship with inclusion of the partnership elements lending to much-needed support of the local Jump Start program, which is the cornerstone of the Canadian Tire charitable arm.

The Smiths Falls Settlers play in the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League (CPJHL), a league operating with teams throughout Ontario and Quebec. The CPJHL was formed when a group of existing and new owners responded to the ever-increasing desire of players to play in a league that will enhance their plans to be a college-bound hockey player. The CPJHL was put together to fill this the role of increasing competitiveness, commitment to the junior hockey player, and to provide a recruiting ground for ACDC, NCAA, NJCAA and CIS college coaches.

The CPJHL is a developmental league, where many players begin their junior careers and that is why all team owners are highly involved, working together to ensure the success of any and all players that play in the league. It is this developmental stage of the player’s life where adjustments to the playing style at a higher level of hockey and maintaining the academic excellence requirements of one’s collegiate futures must co-exist.

The CPJHL’s mission is to fully prepare every player to achieve their personal hockey goals.
