Hawks sign strong skater, offensive defenseman Mahmoud ahead of '18-19 season

The Grey Highlands Hawks have announced the signing of defenseman Yanis Mahmoud for the upcoming 2018-19 CPJHL season.

The French native is described as a puck-moving defenseman who likes to get involved offensively with his end-to-end rushes. He is a good skater who is hard to knock off the puck with his strong physique and decent puck control.

During the 2017-18 season, Mahmoud played for Graal du College Claretin of the School Preparatory Hockey League and as a 16-year-old, he registered 15 points in 20 games.

Mahmoud began the season practicing and playing with the Toronto Titans Midget AAA team of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. However, with a number of returning players, there was no roster spot available for him.

“We first had the opportunity to see Yanis a couple weeks ago while attending the Titans practice,” said Alex Magi, the director of recruiting for the Hawks. “We thought he was one of the more noticeable players on the ice. Once we heard that they did not have a roster spot available for him, we invited him out for a skate and was able to sign him that day. Yanis is still a young player, but we see a lot  of potential in him. We feel the addition of Yanis just adds to the depth in our lineup.”
