Hawks reach over to Latvia for recent signee, aggressive defenseman Rostoks

by Matt Mackinder

The Grey Highlands Hawks have announced the signing of Latvian defenseman Rihards Rostoks.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defender is known for his aggressive style of play and being an intense competitor.

“I like to try and model my game after Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban," said Rostoks. “I try and keep the play in the offensive zone as much as I can. I do not like when the opposition is near our own net."

Rostoks is no stranger to playing in big games.

He began his hockey career playing for Perkons U16 program, where his team competed in many tournaments in Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and Finland, as well as the Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament.

The 2017-18 season proved to be one Rostoks won’t soon forget.

While playing for the HK Lido U18 team, the squad finished the year capturing the U18 championship.

“That was my greatest season of all time," Rostoks said. "Just an awesome experience for me and my teammates."

Although Rihards is only 17 years old, he comes with a lot of experience and is just going to make the Hawks a much tougher team to play against.

"We are very excited to see the potential of this young player as he will continue to grow and develop under Coach Tichbourne's leadership," said the Hawks.
