Hawks add New Zealand flavor with new defenseman Fraser

by Matt Mackinder

The Grey Highlands Hawks have announced the signing of defenseman Ryan Fraser for the 2018-19 season.

Fraser is described as a steady, smart defenseman who can be relied upon to close out the final minute of a game while holding a lead or to kill a penalty.

He has represented New Zealand the past three years internationally, capturing gold in 2016 and serving as an alternate captain in 2017. Fraser has also played the past two seasons under coach Dean Tonks for the Canterbury Men’s Red Devils.

“Ryan has been one of the more consistent defensemen that I have coached,” said Tonks.

Fraser has also competed for his high school team where he received an award for the best defensemen in the league as well as top defensemen for the South Island High School Tournament.

“I am eager to join the Grey Highlands Hawks in order to continue my development and experience hockey in Canada,” added Fraser.
