CPJHL Showcase shows parity within league as 20-game event yields tight competition

All Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League teams converged on Bala and Port Carling earlier this week for the CPJHL Showcase event at two rinks and the 20 games proved to be competitive and entertaining.


Here are the highlights:

TUESDAY, NOV. 14

Essa Stallions 2, Maniwaki Mustangs 1

Tim Holmstrom’s goal with 8:17 to play in the third period proved to be the game-winner for Essa.

Smiths Falls Settlers 3, Bracebridge Pioneers 1

Felix Stephen scored twice in the third period for the Settlers.

Grey Highlands Hawks 3, Almonte Jr. Sharpshooters 0

Zachery Mather stopped all 25 Almonte shots for the shutout, while three different players scored for the Hawks.

Lake Erie Eagles 3, Seaforth Generals 2

Collin Bisbee made 32 saves for the Eagles, while David Van Horn turned aside 29 for the Generals.

Coldwater Ice Wolves 4, EOHA 1

After EOHA scored first, the Ice Wolves scored four unanswered goals to take the win as George Hopkins scored once with an assist and Eno Ulshafer added two assists.

Bracebridge Pioneers 2, Maniwaki Mustangs 1

Doug Ledger popped both goals for Bracebridge and Jacob Evans finished with 19 saves.

Smiths Falls Settlers 4, Essa Stallions 0

Felix Stephen had two goals and an assist, while Kyle Fritz stopped all 18 Essa shots fired his way for the shutout.

Almonte Jr. Sharpshooters 3, Seaforth Generals 2

Steve Hursti’s second goal of the game with 1:19 to play stood as the game-winning tally for Almonte.

EOHA 5, Grey Highlands Hawks 4

Brandon Paquette and Christopher Turpin scored two goals each and Kevin Monfils added three assists for EOHA.

Coldwater Ice Wolves 5, Lake Erie Eagles 2

Joseph Iron notched two goals for Coldwater, who scored the game’s last four goals. Ian Petro had two assists for the Eagles.


WEDNESDAY, NOV. 15

Essa Stallions 5, Almonte Jr. Sharpshooters 0

Jared Weatherbee scored twice for the Stallions and Ethan James stopped all six shots he faced and also added an assist on a Kristoffer Klarin’s opening goal.

Bracebridge Pioneers 7, Lake Erie Eagles 1

Kayden Voskamp compiled a hat trick for the Pioneers.

Grey Highlands Hawks 5, Maniwaki Mustangs 4 (shootout)

Marshall Stewart’s goal with nine seconds left in the third period pulled the Hawks into the tie before Daniel Bureau scored the lone goal in the shootout.

Smiths Falls Settlers 2, Seaforth Generals 1

Reilly Degray’s goal with 9:20 to play in the third was the game-winner for Smiths Falls.

Coldwater Ice Wolves 10, Almonte Jr. Sharpshooters 4

The Ice Wolves scored six in the first period. Ethan Haywood finished with a goal and four assists, Joseph Iron three goals and an assist and Samuel Kakara two goals for Coldwater.

Bracebridge Pioneers 4. EOHA 0

Carson Jacklin registered a pair of goals and Jamie Gee earned the shutout with a 20-save performance in goal.

Smiths Falls Settlers 3, Grey Highlands Hawks 0

Felix Stephen scored twice and Preston Bobbish and Kyle Fritz shared the shutout with a combined 22-save outing.

Essa Stallions 5, Lake Erie Eagles 0

Kurt Walsh made 29 saves between the pipes for the Stallions, who had five different players find the back of the net.

Coldwater Ice Wolves 4, Maniwaki Mustangs 2

Four different players scored for Coldwater, while Eloi Bouchard stopped 33 shots in the Maniwaki crease.

EOHA 5, Seaforth Generals 2

Frederik Durocher finished with 23 saves for EOHA and Samuel Hudon tallied a goal and two assists for the victors.


In addition to these games, more than 50 players came out to tryouts for the two teams the CPJHL will send to Las Vegas next month to participate in the Western States Shootout showcase event, hosted by the WSHL.

Teams should be announced by the end of November.
